Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, or direct contact with the rash. It is most common in children but can also affect adults, where the illness is usually more severe.
The early stage of chickenpox usually starts with:
- Fever and feeling unwell
- A red, itchy rash that turns into fluid-filled blisters
- Loss of appetite or tiredness
While many people recover in about a week, chickenpox can sometimes lead to skin infections, scarring, or complications in those with weaker immune systems.
