Meningococcal disease is caused by bacteria that can lead to two major conditions:
- Meningitis: Inflammation of the protective layers around the brain and spinal cord
- Septicaemia: A serious bloodstream infection
This illness can develop quickly and is often spread through close contact, such as coughing, kissing, or sharing eating utensils. It can affect people of all ages, but teenagers and young adults are more commonly at risk.
